One of the biggest challenges faced by the Polish power system is to improve flexibility, that is a potential to respond quickly to changing demand and supply. The improvement of the power system flexibility is of key importance for safer NPS and better economic effectiveness thereof.

The power sector in Poland will be changing. Its development should involve the increase of the share of the installed power in the variable RES (photovoltaics, wind power plants) and increase in the efficiency of the power generation in system units. Coordination of the operation of the variable RES with conventional units in the future will be crucial to ensure safety of the power system and reduce costs of its operation. There are more and more possibilities to improve the power system flexibility as the technology progresses: digitalization and better availability of smart metering equipment.

Flexibility in the power generation industry does not only mean the capability of conventional units to respond quickly to the change of demand. The balancing market is key. The demand side, that is DSR, system services, networks, is important. The flexibility can be achieved through the synergy among the power, transport and heat generation sector. First of all, appropriate organization of the electricity market is essential. The reason is that the flexibility, in order to be improved, should be appropriately rewarded.

The adressee of this conference were the representatives of the energy sector from public and private institutions and companies, media and other people interested in the issue of flexibility in the context of the changes on the energy market in Poland.
